Here at Golden Gully Farming Ltd and the Little Red School House, as well as looking after our stock, we are also passionate about caring for the land and the environment for future generations. Some of our environmental endeavors includes:
* Pine tree planting - each year we continue to plant pine trees in areas that are erosion prone or unproductive land. These trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and convert it into sugars (carbon) using sunlight through a process called photosynthesis. This is known as carbon sequestration which is great for reducing greenhouse gases and mitigating climate change. Another benefit of these trees, is that they provide shelter for our stock during rough weather.
* Native tree planting - we also plant native trees that we grow ourselves from seedlings. Although natives are slower growing, they create biodiversity and provide habitat for native bird and wildlife which contributes to a healthier and more vibrant environment.
* Compost - in the accommodation, we have a container for guests to add any food waste that we then add to our compost heap at home which we put on our vegetable garden annually to feed and enhance the soil.
* Recycling - we try to recycle as much as possible to eliminate waste going into landfill. We recycle everything from paper, cardboard, plastics, tins, cans, bottles, coffee pods right through to agricultural containers, balage wrap and e-waste.
* Paperless procedures - we are making a conscious effort to reduce using paper and moving towards using electronic measures to lessen our paper consumption and be more environmentally friendly.
* New Zealand Farm Assurance Plus Gold Standard (NZFAP Plus) Accreditation - As part of our farming system, we have attained the gold standard for farming accreditation. This means that we have a whole holistic approach to our farming at the highest level possible. It takes in all aspects from our stock, the soil, the land, water management, our team around us, health and safety, biodiversity, biosecurity, greenhouse gases and climate change. We are audited on this every three years to ensure we are meeting the necessary criteria to retain that gold standard.
